Waiting
See all the garden goodies waiting for spring? I know I am. I walked around my garden space this morning thinking about the spring. This is a peek through the gates of a garden art shop on Delmas Ave. in Pascagoula.
Monday morning is really sneaking up on me. I'll be headed up to Columbus Ms. for a workshop. It's a new Mississippi locale for me. I just wish that the Finman, Copper, and Milton would all fit in my suitcase.

Unseasonably Seasonable
The weather here is amazing, fallish in an unseasonably cool and pleasant fall way. Fin and Hound took a break in the back yard today, internetting in the shade. Well, at least Fin internetted while Hound snoozed.
I'm actually a bit worried because tonight it's forecast to be in the 40's. We usually have a nice long fall with a long growing season. Here we are at the beginning of October with lows in the 40's. It's wonderful and distressing all in the same moment.

A Break From the Natural, Mostly.
I've made my annual pilgrimage to the Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival on the USM Campus. This is honestly a highpoint of the year. I truly hope that the future brings me back again and again. In addition to all the wonderful, helpful and educational things I heard today, my absolute favorite comment of the day came from, Father Goose or as he is sometimes known, Charles Ghigna. Prior to sharing some of his wonderful and enchanting poetry for children Mr. Ghigna discussed how privileged he felt to address a crowd of librarians. In his words, "The people that own the keys to the kingdom."
How true!
School librarians and public librarians truly do hold the keys that open so many doors for children; imagination, adventure, love, and so much more. Welcome to the Kingdom.
As for the lettuce photo, that's a bit of showing off and absolutely unrelated to the Book Festival. You see before you the first harvest of 2010, and the lettuce I ate on my sandwich yesterday. Although, to be perfectly frank I planted this lettuce last November. It managed to overwinter quite nicely despite our unusually cold temps.

The Gate To Nowhere
Above, you will see the gate I built. Said gate, has caused me to feel that the Irish should create a new blessing similiar in vein to "May the road rise up to meet you" except more like, "May you always move into a home with a supply of cast-off lumber in the shed." I know, not as poetic but certainly as valuable.
That's right my gate cost practically nothing. Although, I'm sure the neighbors did wonder why in the world I planted a gate in the middle of the side yard.
I'm sure you all will be glad to know that I have since added a garden fence and even a garden to my gate. Tomatoes, eggplant, corn, peppers, squash... cross your fingers. I'm hoping they actually make vegetables.
