Day Trip, Longue Vue House and Gardens

Hand Crank for greenhouse windows at Longue Vue.

Saturday, I drove to New Orleans and met up with Big Sis for a tour of the Longue Vue House and Gardens. The gardens were absolutely beautiful. Apart from a lovely formal garden and "wild" garden, they house a really fun learning garden for children. Definitely a fun family destination.

I think the thing that struck me most was that the woman that planned and owned the home decided to have it turned into a museum before her death. In her old age, she moved out of her home to a hotel so work could begin on the transition from home to tour destination. I just don't think that even if I had the money to be that kind of philanthropic that I could give up my last years in my own home. (Just saying.) It must have given her great joy to see the museum created before her death.

  2. she wanted a legacy for you to visit. I would say she was very wise looking back.

  3. that said Bethany, there is a certain pleasure that comes from accomplishing goals. She may have moved out of her home but she saw the realisation of a dream that would ( and has) lived long after her.

  4. Wiz, it is a beautiful house, but the gardens were my favorite part. I would like to go back next may to see the area where they have the daylilies planted. Looks like it would be very pretty.

Bobby, definitely wise. I think were I in her position I'd have to leave my legacy in my will so I could enjoy my gardens for the last few years. Very, very generous of her.

Maggs, I absolutely agree. She died in '81 (I think) but the museum was completed in '80.

    Kate, isn't it!

  6. Kit, I'm SO glad to "see" you and very glad you stopped by. I've been hoping you both are well. Also, I wanted to let you know that because I don't have an account at KCL I can't leave comments on your blog anymore. (At least I assume it is because I don't have an account.) It won't let me post.

    Hope you are well.

  7. Thanks for letting me know about the comments. I'll look into it, perhaps I'll just reactivate my Blogger account. That is, if I wind-up doing any blog posts, life is so hectic right now I may only have time to comment on others entries. We'll see how it goes... Thing2 says to say "HI".

  9. KIT, "Hi" to Thing2. :)

When I try to leave a comment on KCL, even after filling in all the information fields, I get this error, "Invalid security code. Press your browsers back button and try again." As you know, in the past I could leave comments. I think this started about the time they began having problems with spam.
